Harvey and Me
(The script to my next mini-film)
Est: Charlie’s Bar (exterior)
Interior: Glass Doors
Elwood Dodd entering carrying jacket with bartender behind bar.
CRACKER:
How are you doing, Mr. Dodd?
DODD:
Not too bad, Mr. Cracker.
(Dodd sits on a stool at the bar as the bartender sets up two martini glasses)
CRACKER:
You want your usual?
DODD:
No
Only one Martini tonight
CRACKER: (nodding his head in the direction of a vacant stool)
And how’s he?
DODD:
Harvey?
(Dodd looks around the room)
To tell you the truth, I expected to find him here.
CRACKER:
I thought he always came in with you?
DODD:
Harvey has taken to wandering lately, and I don’t always know where.
CRACKER:
I’m sure he’ll turn up. He always does
DODD:
This might come as a surprise to you, but I feel a little lost without him.
CRACKER:
I don’t get what you’re so worried about. He seems to like you well enough.
DODD:
Harvey meets so many good people, I’m afraid he might meet someone he likes better than he likes me.
CRACKER:
I don’t see that happening any time soon
DODD: (reaching into his jacket pocket)
Still, I was wonder if I could give you my card so that you could call me if he happens to turn up.
Call this number. Don’t call that number. That’s my old number.
CRACKER:
If I see him I’ll let you know.
DODD:
Perhaps you would like to come to my house for dinner
CRACKER:
I’m kind of busy tonight. Maybe another night
DODD:
When?
Can you come tomorrow night?
CRACKER:
This would be all right with your sister?
DODD:
I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. I bring people home all the time. The only one she doesn’t want to see is my six foot four invisible rabbit.
CRACKER:
What does she have against Harvey?
DODD:
I don’t exactly know.
Harvey likes her. Although I think he’s concerned about her sending me off to live as the sanitarium.
CRACKER:
I heard it’s not that bad out there.
DODD:
I’m sure it’s a find place. Clean sheets ever night and regular bathes.
But Harvey says he likes our old place just fine.
CRACKER:
But your sister will send you whether you want to go or not?
DODD:
She doesn’t mean any harm. She just worried about me and thinks I need looking after.
Still, if she insists that I move, I don’t know how I can say no.
I would hate to disappoint her.
CRACKER:
And what does your invisible friend have to say about all this?
DODD:
I keep telling Harvey we can always snake out and come here.
I can’t imagine my sister minding that as long as she doesn’t actually have to see Harvey any place.
CRACKER:
Only now you can’t find the rabbit?
DODD:
Exactly.
And I’m worried I night never see him again or get to tell him how much he has meant in my life
CRACKER: (nodding towards the door which opens by itself)
I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that.
DODD: (looks in the direction of the door)
Harvey!
Where have you been?
Come have a drink.
We have a lot to talk about.
